Agustín Marchesín’s ACL injury, sustained at La Bombonera during Boca Juniors’ 3-0 Libertadores win over Barcelona of Ecuador, has opened the door for Leandro Brey, who will start Sunday’s Superclásico at the Monumental.

Despite CONMEBOL allowing a permanent replacement on the registered list for serious injuries, the board led by Juan Román Riquelme have decided not to sign another goalkeeper, according to LaNumer12.com.ar. The 38-year-old Marchesín will be out for more than seven months.

Boca will see out the semester with Brey as first choice, supported by Javier García, while a reserve goalkeeper is set to be promoted. Brey had recently returned to the reserves to regain minutes.

The 23-year-old from Lomas de Zamora already has 33 senior appearances for Boca, 26 of them starts, and boasts 16 clean sheets.

Sunday will be his first top-flight meeting with River Plate, although he has faced them three times at reserve level, with one win and two draws and only one conceded.

He is unbeaten in clásicos against other grandes in the top tier. There have been two wins over San Lorenzo as a starter, a victory against Racing after replacing the injured Javi García, and a draw with Independiente.

Backed by the club’s decision and his numbers, Brey now confronts the biggest test of his young career.
