Leeds United addressed homophobic chanting heard during Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Brighton at Elland Road, as LGBTQ+ supporters’ group Marching Out Together voiced dismay.
Leeds won 1-0 in their final home league game of the season, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin deciding it five minutes into added time. The club said in a statement on Monday that it was aware of homophobic chanting and that anyone identified would face a lengthy stadium ban.
It added that discriminatory chanting has no place in football, and that additional cameras had been installed in the stands for the fixture to help identify offenders.
The club also noted disappointment at Jimmy Savile chants, stressing that this did not make other discriminatory or homophobic chanting acceptable.
On Tuesday morning, Marching Out Together said they were angry and disappointed at some fans’ homophobic chants and gestures, but welcomed the club’s prompt response. They thanked Leeds for continued efforts to challenge discrimination and promote inclusion, and said the vast majority of supporters back action to eradicate offensive behaviour.
