Leeds United and their Premier League rivals are set for an expanded use of VAR next season if the Whites stay up, with officials also considering a gripe from November’s defeat at Manchester City.

Sky Sports reports that IFAB has extended VAR’s remit from this summer, allowing reviews of corners and second yellow cards.

Leeds might have avoided a scare in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, when Karl Darlow saved from Amadou Onana after a corner awarded following an offside run by Ollie Watkins. Under the new scope, VAR could have identified the offside and given a free-kick instead.

Another area of interest for Daniel Farke concerns tactical goalkeeper injury delays. In last year’s 3-2 loss at Manchester City, Gianluigi Donnarumma went down as team-mates headed to Pep Guardiola for instructions after a Leeds tweak. Farke said the motive was obvious, described it as smart and within the rules, but questioned the spirit of fair play and left the matter with the authorities.

At IFAB’s meeting in Wales on Saturday, referees were also handed tools to curb time-wasting, including a five-second countdown for slow throw-ins. Substitutions must be completed in 10 seconds or the incoming player must remain off for at least one minute. A player whose injury stops play could be required to wait one minute on the sidelines.

Players currently treated on the pitch must leave for 30 seconds and that period is set to be doubled, except when treatment follows a challenge worthy of a yellow or red card. The changes are due from the first of July and are set to feature at the World Cup this summer.
