Leeds United have confirmed Illan Meslier will leave at the end of this month when his contract expires. The club said in a statement that he played a major role in both promotion campaigns and would remain part of their history.
The Frenchman has made 215 appearances across nearly seven years, lifting two Championship titles, but he has not played a competitive senior game for more than 12 months.
After a run of errors he was dropped for the final seven matches of the 2024/25 Championship season, and the summer arrival of Lucas Perri left him as third choice.
Meslier was Leeds’ young player of the year in 2020/21, keeping 11 Premier League clean sheets as the club finished ninth in their first top-flight campaign for 16 years.
He later won the 2023/24 Championship Golden Glove and made the division’s team of the year, then recorded 21 clean sheets in 39 games the following season.
Signed from FC Lorient in August 2019, he made the move permanent in 2020. Interest in a transfer last summer did not lead to a deal and the 26-year-old did not feature.
He was on the senior bench six times amid an injury to Perri, most recently in November, and played twice for the under-21s in February. As a free agent with substantial experience, he is expected to attract interest this summer despite recent inactivity.
