Leeds United have paused contract talks with Daniel Farke until the end of the season, and he might need to keep the club in the Premier League to earn a new deal.

Farke will enter the final 12 months of his contract in June and wants to stay. He had hoped to begin discussions earlier but, according to Leeds Live, negotiations are on hold while the board assesses top-flight survival.

Leeds are six points above the drop zone with nine games left, yet only two wins in 13 league matches have stalled momentum. Tuesday’s dismal home defeat by Sunderland was viewed as a missed chance to move closer to safety.

Chairman Paraag Marathe and major investor Pete Lowy were seen in deep conversation at the Dakota Hotel after that loss.

Lowy said: “We have not yet stayed in the Premier League. We are not yet secured, and so we’re not talking about it.”

He added: “To talk about Daniel’s contract now is just not on the table. Not for him and not for us. We have one goal.”

Farke took charge in 2023 on a deal until the summer of 2027. He led Leeds to promotion in his second season, winning the Championship on goal difference with 100 points, recording Leeds’ best-ever points haul.
