A Leeds United supporter has been arrested over homophobic abuse during November’s visit to Brighton and Hove Albion.
Sussex Police confirmed a 46-year-old man from Wakefield was detained on suspicion of using threatening or abusive behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress at The American Express Stadium. He remains under investigation.
The force works in close partnership with Brighton and Hove Albion to respond to reports of homophobic behaviour at the ground. Abusive language can make other supporters feel unsafe and can affect staff and officers working to keep people safe.
The statement also stressed that attitudes are changing and that abuse has no place in stadiums or in the game. Reports of homophobic or racist abuse and public order offences will be tackled and prosecutions sought where reports are made.
Victims of hate crime are encouraged to report via the Sussex Police website.
