Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson has missed Sweden training through illness ahead of their World Cup opener.

According to The Sweden Herald, he sat out Tuesday’s session in Dallas and remained at the team hotel with mild symptoms, five days before the Group F opener, while the other 25 squad members planned to train.

Gudmundsson joined Leeds from Lille for £10m last summer and his strong form earned selection in Graham Potter’s Sweden squad for the tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

A hamstring injury ended his Premier League campaign early, but he was still named in the squad and returned to play 64 minutes in last week’s final pre-World Cup friendly against Greece.

Sweden begin their World Cup campaign against Tunisia in Monterrey, Mexico, in the early hours of Monday morning, Swedish time.
