Leeds United’s goalkeeper situation is again a priority this summer, 12 months after Championship promotion. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, a deal has been agreed to extend Alex Cairns’ stay and the club admire Japan international Zion Suzuki and James Trafford.
Uncertainty has lingered since Karl Darlow replaced Illan Meslier for the 2024/25 run-in. Leeds then paid £16 million for Lucas Perri on a four-year deal. His debut campaign was difficult, he was dropped after efforts against Manchester United and Newcastle United in January, and made four further FA Cup appearances.
Last summer’s work largely landed, with a 14th-place finish. The remaining gaps were a right-wing or No 10 profile and, crucially, in goal. Harry Wilson’s free transfer addresses the attacking need.
The picture has since shifted again. Meslier departed as expected then joined Arsenal, while Darlow looks set to sign for Manchester United on a free. Perri is currently the only senior goalkeeper available to Daniel Farke.
Had Darlow renewed, Leeds might have delayed naming a new No 1, but that option has gone. Action is required now.
Reports suggest Suzuki and Trafford could each cost £30m or more, a significant outlay as the new Squad Cost Ratio tightens spending for now. Whether Leeds commit to a long-term solution now, or defer and invest elsewhere, remains to be seen. It is going to be another summer of change in goal.
