Leeds United's Noah Okafor adopted a cautious approach on his Switzerland return after a recent hamstring injury, remaining unused against Germany and Norway.
The forward was called up to replace Filip Ugrinic, his first involvement in 17 months. The federation announced the decision to leave him out was precautionary and agreed between player and staff.
He had only just returned for Leeds, playing the final 22 minutes of the 0-0 draw at Brentford. He later expressed gratitude for the recall and noted it had been a joint decision not to risk minutes so soon after injury.
Leeds will welcome that stance, with his one-v-one threat having been missed in recent weeks. He is hoped to be influential in the Premier League survival fight and could feature in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final at West Ham.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin played 32 minutes for England against Uruguay before returning home, understood to have been pre-planned and not performance-related. Daniel James and Ethan Ampadu were initially rested for Wales against Northern Ireland before second-half cameos. Brenden Aaronson got 11 minutes for the USA against Portugal overnight, while Ao Tanaka came off the bench for Japan against England.
