Leeds beat fellow top-flight side Sunderland 1-0 in New Jersey in the early hours of Friday UK time, Lukas Nmecha scoring early. It was their first win of the summer.

Both clubs returned to the Premier League last season and avoided the drop, bucking the recent trend for promoted teams. Sunderland finished seventh to reach the Europa League, seven places and seven points above Leeds. The Whites were 14th, survival secured with three games left and eight points clear of the bottom three.

Arsenal are 7-4 favourites for the title, ahead of Manchester City at 10-3 and Liverpool at 6-1. Chelsea are fourth, up from fifth, at 8-1, Manchester United fifth, down from fourth, at 9-1, and Tottenham sixth at 28-1.

By contrast, the previous season’s Championship runners-up Burnley went straight back down.
