Fabio Capello delivered his verdict on the controversy around Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni following Saturday’s Derby d’Italia.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, the former Juventus coach condemned the defender’s behavior.
Alessandro Bastoni found himself at the center of intense scrutiny after his antics in Saturday’s clash at San Siro.
Indeed, the 26-year-old convinced referee Federico La Penna to send off Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu.
The Frenchman was already on a yellow card when Bastoni simulated a foul to get his opponent sent off.
Meanwhile, Inter seized the numerical advantage to claim a potentially season-defining 3-2 victory.
As a result, Bastoni has become the number-one target for criticism among Juventus supporters.
Many of them have accused him of unsportsmanlike conduct during one of Serie A’s most high-profile fixtures.
Furthermore, Bastoni had received death threats on social media before turning off comments on his Instagram profile.

“Two things struck me in particular about the incident at San Siro,” Capello said. “First: a player like Bastoni, of international caliber and a cornerstone of our national team, cannot – and above all, must not – behave like that.
“It was very unpleasant for everyone who loves football to see him deceive the referee with a blatant simulation.
“That’s especially while already on a yellow card, thereby risking a second booking himself.
“Second: I know Chivu very well; he was my player at Roma. But his post-match comments deeply disappointed me.
“The Inter coach was not consistent with what he had said on the eve of the game, and in the end he gave the impression of justifying what happened.
“More than his words, however, his actions matter.
“Chivu took Bastoni off at halftime because he knew exactly that he would be at risk if he stayed on the pitch.
“I would have expected statements of a completely different tone, especially after a victory.”
