Leicester City are interested in Birmingham City's Lyndon Dykes, who has been in talks to join Charlton Athletic.

Leicester City are interested in signing Lyndon Dykes on loan from Birmingham City, although Charlton Athletic are still hopeful of landing the striker.

The Scotland international was expected to leave Blues in the summer following their promotion back to the Championship, but a late move to Hibs fell through, meaning he remained part of Chris Davies’ plans at St. Andrew’s.

Since then, Dykes has struggled for regular game time, although he has still featured 21 times, with the vast majority of those outings coming from the bench just as he did in League One.

Dykes has cropped up with crucial late goals at Blues this season, but a move could happen this month. Football League World exclusively revealed that Dykes will not be allowed to depart until a replacement is brought in, though the ex-QPR forward is not short of suitors at this moment in time.

Leicester City targeting move for Birmingham City’s Lyndon Dykes amid Charlton Athletic interest

With the World Cup on the horizon, Dykes will want more minutes ahead of the tournament, so a move has always been on the cards this month, and it had been thought that Charlton would win the race for his signature.

However, in a potential twist, the Daily Mail has revealed that Leicester are now trying to bring the 30-year-old in on loan, although a move may not be straightforward.

The update explains that the financial situation at the King Power Stadium means departures may be required before they can bring in players, but Marti Cifuentes is ‘desperate’ to strengthen his attack if possible.

Jordan Ayew, Patson Daka and Bobby De Cordova-Reid are the main striking options for the Foxes at the moment, but none have truly convinced this season in what has been an underwhelming campaign for Leicester so far.

Lyndon Dykes has shown he can be effective in the Championship

This is not the sort of signing that will particularly excite Leicester fans, but this is their reality at the moment.

Even if it won’t be a popular signing, you can understand the logic of going for someone like Dykes in the short-term.

Firstly, he will be determined to prove himself, as he will be eager to not just make the plane for Scotland this summer, but to also show that he should be given the starting number nine shirt by Steve Clarke at the World Cup.

As well as that, he won’t need any time to adapt to the demands of the league, as he knows what it’s all about.

Dykes would be happy to be a focal point, and his work-rate, and ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play means he could be the ideal target man for this Leicester team.

With the likes of Stephy Mavididi, Jordan James and Abdul Fatawu in behind, Leicester need someone who can offer a presence and to occupy defenders, allowing those three in particular the time and space to flourish.

So, Dykes could do a job, but Charlton are clearly still keen on bringing him in, and it will be very interesting to see where he ends up, as it’s evident he needs to leave Birmingham this month, as whilst he has made some big contributions, he has spent too much time on the bench.
