The transfer window always carries its share of anticipation, but the conversation surrounding Alexander Isak and Liverpool has been the loudest thread of this summer. On his YouTube channel, journalist Lewis Steele laid out the state of play from the AXA Training Centre, where speculation about the Swedish striker’s next move has intensified.
“It’s all that you guys have been asking me about, it’s all that people on the street have been talking about, it’s all that my colleague Craig Hope has been talking about as well from the Newcastle perspective,” Steele said, reflecting the fever around the potential deal.
The Newcastle forward has long been admired for his technical ability and prolific edge, and the prospect of him joining Arne Slot’s side has gathered serious momentum in recent days. Steele explained, “Will Alexander Isak be a Liverpool player on Tuesday morning? And I suppose the best thing we can say is it is more likely than it was this time yesterday.”
That line alone captures the shift in mood. A saga that had been dominated by uncertainty now has “the door firmly open for Alexander Isak to walk in those doors just behind me, or actually he’ll be on the other side of the building, the posher entrance as I call it, and you know sign a contract, do a medical.”
Steele made clear that while no official bid has been declared, the noises are positive. “I would be surprised if they don’t make that play for it in the next day or two,” he added, underlining the urgency as the window ticks towards its conclusion.
There is almost an omen attached to big Liverpool signings and Steele’s own schedule. “Normally when I am off and have plans all day, something big happens with Liverpool,” he joked, recalling being caught out during the deals for Florian Wirtz, Ryan Gravenberch and Jeremy Frimpong. With him away again, the timing of a possible Alexander Isak Liverpool breakthrough has added a sense of inevitability.
“I have a sneaky feeling it will happen. I’ve been waiting to say that all summer on this transfer saga,” Steele admitted, giving supporters another reason to believe the long chase is edging to a conclusion.
Beyond Isak, the conversation touched on defensive reinforcement, with Steele noting that “Marc Guehi, not as high profile a name as Alexander Isak, but could be just as important in terms of this season at least.” The recognition of Virgil van Dijk’s age and Ibrahima Konaté’s inconsistent availability has only heightened the importance of strengthening in more than one department.
Still, the centrepiece remains the Swedish striker. “The noises around the whole deal in the last 24 hours in particular have been nothing but positive in Liverpool’s favour,” Steele said. He drew comparisons with past landmark windows across English football, insisting that if Isak joins alongside the likes of Wirtz and Frimpong, “there is a genuine case that this is the best transfer window in English football history.”
Arne Slot has been measured in his public comments, but his words leave the door open. As Steele noted, “Slot finished his press conference by saying if we can strengthen the squad, we will.” With the pressure of title rivals Arsenal looming and the clock ticking down, those inside the club are working around the clock. “I can’t see Richard Hughes has got too many plans this weekend. He’s going to be hands on deck trying to get this deal over the line,” Steele explained.
It leaves the picture tantalisingly poised. Liverpool fans have seen these storylines before, often with a dramatic finish. Whether Alexander Isak finally pulls on a red shirt in the coming days could define not just the club’s summer, but the season that lies ahead.
