Liverpool are getting closer to reaching an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of Florian Wirtz.
Wirtz has informed Liverpool of his desire to join the club with the German turning down interest from Bayern Munich in favour of Anfield. Negotiations are ongoing between Liverpool and Leverkusen, over a deal that could eclipse the British transfer record.
Liverpool’s opening offer was believed to be worth around €100m (£84.1m) including add-ons, short of Leverkusen’s valuation of €150m (£126.1m).
A compromise is expected to be found between the sides. Fabrizio Romano has revealed that talks are progressing well and the deal is viewed as a ‘matter of time’. Liverpool’s latest offer is believed to be a fixed fee of £100m with a further £10m in performance-based add-ons.
The Premier League champions have been active in strengthening their squad ahead of next season.
The signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen is expected to be announced imminently, while the Reds have also held talks with Bournemouth over Milos Kerkez. A centre-forward is also on the agenda for Liverpool’s recruitment team.
The signing of Wirtz will represent a statement from the Merseysiders. Wirtz was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in each of the last two campaigns.
He helped Leverkusen to a first-ever Bundesliga title last season and recorded 31 goals and assists in all competitions in 2024/25. The deal will represent a club record for Liverpool, eclipsing the £75m paid to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in 2018.
