Liverpool could be back in the race for Marc Guehi after a fresh twist in the defender’s future at Crystal Palace. Credit goes to Sporting News for the original report that reignited speculation around the 25-year-old, whose contract expires in just eight months.
Guehi is firmly expected to leave Selhurst Park in 2026 after a failed deadline day move to Anfield. Arne Slot’s side had agreed a £35m fee and the England international had already said goodbye to his teammates before Palace pulled the plug. Oliver Glasner blocked the move at the final moment due to a lack of replacement options.
The situation has clearly created friction. Guehi is believed to be frustrated with both Glasner’s decision and Liverpool’s failure to close the deal after weeks of negotiations. Palace chairman Steve Parish has publicly confirmed his desire to sell in order to prevent the captain leaving for nothing next summer.

Liverpool are not alone in this chase. Sporting News reports that Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are firmly in the running, with Guehi tempted by staying in London. There had been concerns over Chelsea re-entering the frame for their former academy graduate, but the Daily Express claims the Blues are no longer pursuing a bid.
A source close to the situation revealed, “Tottenham have edged ahead with London being a major pull, but Liverpool remain confident of their project under Slot.”
Liverpool’s defensive planning is further complicated by Ibrahima Konate likely leaving on a free transfer in 2026. Despite spending heavily in the past window, senior recruitment staff are keen to avoid another bidding war.
Guehi spent 14 years at Chelsea without registering a Premier League appearance before joining Palace in 2021 and quickly becoming one of the division’s most consistent defenders. Sources close to his camp suggest he believes he is ready to take the next step. One insider said, “He wants to compete for trophies, he wants Champions League football.”
With Chelsea out of the running, Liverpool sense an opportunity. The question now is timing. Do they strike early in January for £25m or hold their nerve and try to secure him for free in July?
From a Liverpool perspective, this feels like unfinished business. The club had everything lined up on deadline day, only to watch it fall apart in slow motion. Guehi saying his goodbyes and then having to return to the dressing room was a moment that will not be forgotten easily. If anything, that kind of emotional rollercoaster makes a future deal even more likely. Players rarely let that chapter go unwritten.
Supporters are tired of near-misses in the market, but Guehi ticks every box. Homegrown, Premier League proven, captain material and entering his prime. At £25m he becomes a bargain, especially when factoring in Konate’s potential exit. Real Madrid will always turn heads but Liverpool can offer something few clubs can — a realistic path to trophies while playing every week.
If Tottenham truly lead the race then Liverpool must act decisively. Slot’s project is still being shaped and securing a defensive pillar for the long term would send a major signal. Guehi already wanted the move once. Hand him the shirt and finish what was started.
