Liverpool plunged deeper into turmoil after humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest triggering eruption of anger among supporters and intensifying pressure on manager Arne Slot whose position now looks increasingly fragile.

Goals from Murillo, Nicola Savona and Morgan Gibbs-White handed Liverpool their sixth Premier League defeat of the season and their sixth loss in the last seven league match.

A historic collapse backed by the numbers

The defeat carried damning historical significance:

Squawka: Liverpool have lost Premier League home match by margin of 3+ goal for only the second time in the last ten season. The previous: 1-4 vs Manchester City (2021).Opta: Liverpool have now lost back to back Premier League games by 3+ goal for the first time since April 1965 under Bill Shankly. It is also the first time since August 2015 that Liverpool have conceded three goals at Anfield without scoring.

These numbers paint the picture of club that has gone from title chasing ambitions to near collapse in matter of weeks.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Slot admitted responsibility:

"Whether things go right or wrong, it’s my responsibility. We created chances but not enough. After the first goal we could not maintain our level"

He also highlighted the defensive disasters from set pieces:

Captain Virgil van Dijk delivered unusually blunt assessment:

"We conceded easy goals again. We weren’t good in duels, we were rushed and after the first goal the nerves came. We are in trouble. Everyone must take responsibility"

He added that supporters leaving early could not be blamed:

"Losing 3-0 at Anfield.. it’s very bad. They have been with us in good and bad moments.. they’ll be with us again when we recover"

Klopp back in the frame? Liverpool look for alternatives

British media outlets including SportBible, Metro, Daily Mail, have reported that Liverpool’s ownership and sporting structure have already begun exploring alternatives to Slot.

At the top of the list:

Jurgen Klopp, the most successful Liverpool manager of the modern era.

According to SportBible:

  1. Klopp has "entered the list of strong candidates"

Klopp who left Liverpool in 2024 after nine transformative years, recently told Metro:

"I said I wouldn’t coach another English club. That means if I come back, it would be Liverpool. So yes.. theoretically, it’s possible"

Klopp currently works in global talent identification role tied to Red Bull clubs but has rejected multiple coaching offers.

Why pressure is mounting

Liverpool now sit 11th in the Premier League table with just 18 point from 12 matc, eight point behind leaders Arsenal who have gone 14 game unbeaten.

Since early autumn, Liverpool have:

  • Lost 8 of their last 11 match in all competitions
  • Won only 3
  • Conceded three goal or more in consecutive league games
  • Collapsed defensively especially on set pieces & transitions

Despite heavy summer investment, roughly £500 million, performances have regressed dramatically.

What happens next?

Liverpool face brutal schedule:

  • A Champions League fixture in midweek
  • Three Premier League game in short span
  • Fan pressure increasing
  • The board discussing contingency plans

Slot insists he will "keep working" & "lift the players" but the club’s hierarchy may not have patience if results continue to spiral.

With Klopp publicly leaving the door ajar and Liverpool supporters nostalgic for stability.. the next few weeks could define the future of the club.
