Liverpool are reportedly “advancing” in discussions with Andoni Iraola to become their next manager after sacking Arne Slot last week.

The Dutchman was removed from his post following a disappointing campaign in which the Reds finished fifth in the table, relinquishing the Premier League title, and didn’t win a trophy.

Iraola was identified as Liverpool’s top target and they have moved swiftly to get the Basque coach, who is out of work after leaving Bournemouth at the end of last season.

Sky Sports News and The Athletic report that “talks are underway” between Liverpool and Iraola, while The Times claim that the discussions are “advancing… as they look to finalise his appointment”.

The search for Slot’s successor is being led by sporting director Richard Hughes, who brought Iraola to Bournemouth in 2023.

Liverpool are following a “proper process” to find the ideal coach who will implement a style of play that suits the squad at his disposal.

The Merseyside outfit have not yet approached any individuals about joining the backroom team and on’t do so until negotiations reach an “advanced stage”.

Iraola has reportedly been approached by AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace after doing a hugely impressive job at Bournemouth.

The Cherries embarked on an 18-game unbeaten run in the second half of the 2025/26 campaign to finish sixth in the Premier League and earn qualification to the UEFA Europa League for the first time ever.

Liverpool have also sounded out Stuttgart boss Sebastian Hoeness and Pierre Sage of RC Lens are possible candidates to take the head coaching job, though Iraola now looks set to be appointed this week.
