It is no secret that Luis Diaz is one of the top targets for Barcelona, in their bid to reinforce the left flank next season.

The Catalans’ sporting director Deco, a strong admirer of the Colombian winger, attempted to bring him to the club last summer and has maintained contact with his entourage in recent months.

Diaz becoming a distant dream

However, according to SPORT, Barcelona concede that Diaz is becoming increasingly unlikely. Significant interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, Al Ahli and Al Nassr, has made the operation extremely complicated, should the Liverpool star become available.

Barça are fully aware that they cannot compete with the financial firepower of Saudi clubs, and only a firm desire from the player to wear the Blaugrana shirt could potentially shift the scenario.

So far, Barcelona have only made enquiries about the Colombian international’s situation and the likelihood of a summer exit from Liverpool. Diaz, after all, has not yet extended his contract with the Premier League side, which runs until 2027.

The La Liga leaders are aware of the possibility that Diaz could be sold, especially if Mohamed Salah signs a new contract at Anfield. But Liverpool’s asking price, expected to exceed €75 million, is currently unfeasible for the Catalan club.

The emergence of Saudi Arabian clubs, known for offering vastly inflated fees to both players and clubs, has further complicated the situation, making his signing an ‘impossible dream’ of sorts.

Within the club, his profile had been prioritised over other targets such as Nico Williams or Rafael Leao. However, in recent weeks, the possibility of signing him has cooled considerably.

Everything now hinges on the decision Diaz makes, and on how much Liverpool ultimately demand. The winger has previously expressed a desire to play for Barcelona, but the enormous financial incentives from Saudi may prove persuasive.
