It was confirmed on Friday that Lazio must operate at net zero this summer after missing the 70% cost-to-revenue threshold, leaving Claudio Lotito with an awkward choice.
According to The Laziali, the club were one of four in Serie A initially affected. Como’s owners injected €110 million to cover a €90 million shortfall, while Sassuolo and Monza also resolved matters, leaving Lazio alone at risk of a zero-balance market.
Lotito has until 30 June to close a €20 million deficit. He can either increase capital or raise the funds through sales, with the latter viewed as likelier.
Several departures are expected, particularly among those on expiring deals, including Alessio Romagnoli, Ivan Provedel and Matteo Canccellieri. Those moves might not be enough, so the hierarchy could again cash in on key players as they did in January.
Mario Gila has been heavily linked with an exit, although Real Madrid hold a 50% sell-on clause that would split any fee. Gennaro Gattuso is keen to keep Christos Mandas, Nicolo Rovella and Kenneth Taylor, yet one of them could still be sacrificed given their market value.
