Lucien Favre has ended his coaching career at the age of 68, announcing the decision on Sunday, 34 years after starting out with Echallens. The former Nice and Borussia Dortmund manager had been out of work since his dismissal by Nice in 2023.

"I made my decision a long time ago, because I felt it was the moment... Everything is done, that is enough. I am at an age where you can see things that way," Favre said. He told Swiss outlet Blick.

Favre built his reputation in Switzerland, then moved to Germany with Hertha Berlin and Borussia Mönchengladbach, before a first spell at Nice from 2016 to 2018. Under him, Nice finished third in Ligue 1.

He returned to Germany in 2018 to take charge of Borussia Dortmund, then went back to Nice for 2022-2023. His second stint ended in January after a Coupe de France exit, and he has not coached since.

"Of course there were offers from Europe and Saudi Arabia. I turned them down politely, because it is definitely over... Otherwise I would still be on the pitch at 70."

He helped develop Granit Xhaka, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, won Swiss titles with FC Zurich in 2006 and 2007, and lifted the German Supercup with Borussia Dortmund in 2019.
