It is fair to say that there have been a few teething problems for Lucas Chevalier (23) at Paris Saint-Germain. The goalkeeper, seen as the long-term successor to Mike Maignan at international level, has been inconsistent since making the move from formative club Lille OSC to the Parc des Princes over the summer.

He replaced Gianluigi Donnarumma, who despite a mixed spell at PSG, finished his time at the club in the form of his life, leading PSG to their first UEFA Champions League title. However, with his contract nearing expiry and with talks over a renewal hitting a brick wall, he was sold to Manchester City.

Luis Enrique, speaking on Monday, hasn’t forgotten the criticism that the Italian received. “Do you remember Donnarumma? You (the media) killed him for four years. He was always criticised. When you are a goalkeeper at PSG, you have to learn to live with that,” said the Spaniard.

The same will go for Chevalier, especially given a string of unconvincing performances. Luis Enrique, however, leapt to the Frenchman’s defence. “I am very happy with Chevalier. When we recruit a player, we are thinking about the long-term,” said the PSG manager. At just 23, Chevalier certainly has time on his side and the trust of his manager.
