Luis Enrique will contest a fourth Champions League semi-final, his third in a row with PSG, underlining his elite standing.
L'Équipe says Guardiola, despite City's last-16 exit to Real Madrid (1-2, 0-3), has 10 semi-finals, level with Carlo Ancelotti, the ex-PSG coach with five titles and now Brazil boss.
At 55, Enrique sits second on four alongside Diego Simeone, who has done it with one club, Atlético Madrid since 2011. He was a Champions League finalist in 2014 and 2016. Atlético remain in this season’s competition and could face PSG in the final, as they will not meet in the semi-finals.
Spanish coaches have prospered with multiple teams. Guardiola did so with three, winning with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011 and with City in 2023, while Bayern brought semi-finals in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Luis Enrique has done it with two, first lifting the 2015 trophy with Barcelona, and now with PSG.
He is the only coach on a current run of three straight semi-finals, yet José Mourinho leads the all-time streak with five between 2010 and 2014. Mourinho left Inter on the 2010 title, then took Real Madrid to the last four from 2011 to 2013 before joining Chelsea, and he has not returned to a final since. He earlier won the competition with Porto in 2004, beating Monaco 3-0. He also trails four-in-a-row sequences by Guardiola at Barcelona from 2009 to 2012 and Vicente Del Bosque with Real Madrid from 2000 to 2003.
