Lukasz Fabianski (40) is back at West Ham United, just four months after bidding what many thought was a permanent farewell. The Athletic have reported that the 40-year-old goalkeeper has signed a new deal running until the end of the 2025-26 season, sealing a surprise return to the club where he became a fan favourite across seven previous campaigns.
Fabianski, who departed in May alongside Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal, and Danny Ings, said on re-signing for the club, “This club means a lot to me…I’ve always been a player who puts the team above my own goals. To be back among the people here feels beautiful.”
The move adds experience to Graham Potter’s goalkeeping department, which already features summer arrival Mads Hermansen from Leicester and long-standing No.1 Alphonse Areola. For Potter, the decision was a natural one: “Lukasz knows the club inside out. His professionalism, personality and care for West Ham are invaluable. He’s a top goalkeeper and a top example for our younger players.”
Fabianski’s Premier League career started at Arsenal, where, after six seasons, he moved to Swansea City, before making the switch to east London in 2018. Over the next five years, he cemented his place as West Ham’s first-choice goalkeeper, delivering consistency and calm between the posts. He was integral to the Hammers’ 2022-23 Europa Conference League triumph, the club’s first major silverware in more than four decades.
Across 215 appearances for the club, the Polish international recorded 55 clean sheets. Even as Areola increasingly assumed first-choice duties, Fabianski remained a trusted deputy, featuring 14 times in the Premier League last season before bowing out with an appearance against Ipswich Town on the campaign’s final day.
West Ham return to Premier League action on Saturday as they face Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby.
