Luke O’Nien has lauded Simon Moore’s influence behind the scenes after Sunderland triggered a one-year extension for the experienced goalkeeper.

According to Sunderland Echo, the option keeps the 36-year-old, formerly of Coventry City, Sheffield United and Cardiff City, at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats gear up for Premier League and European football next season.

Moore has not been a regular starter since arriving, making only a handful of outings last season. He provided experienced cover alongside Robin Roefs, Melker Ellborg and Anthony Patterson, and is highly regarded in Régis Le Bris’ squad for his standards and leadership.

O’Nien said contributions from non-starters are vital, in Europe or otherwise, pointing to Moore, who did not feature this season, as a crucial cog who sets the culture and knits the group together. He revealed he kept Moore’s shirt in his locker all season as motivation to improve and emulate the senior keeper.

Reflecting after the Europa League berth was clinched against Chelsea on the final day at the Stadium of Light, O’Nien added that Moore’s impact on the dressing room is hard to quantify and that he is top class. He also recalled receiving an anniversary photo of their celebrations, with plenty of selfies from that night.
