Luke O’Nien has hailed Simon Moore’s influence after Sunderland triggered a one-year extension for the 36-year-old goalkeeper.

According to Sunderland Echo, the option keeps the former Coventry City, Sheffield United and Cardiff City player at the Stadium of Light next season as the Black Cats prepare for a Premier League and European campaign.

Moore has not been a regular starter since signing, but he remains a trusted figure under Régis Le Bris, valued for his standards, experience and impact on a young squad.

O’Nien said players such as Moore knit the group together and set the culture even without minutes, and revealed he kept Moore’s shirt in his locker all season as motivation.

The keeper has provided experienced cover alongside Robin Roefs, Melker Ellborg and Anthony Patterson. After Europa League qualification against Chelsea on the final day of the Premier League season at the Stadium of Light, O’Nien added: “Honestly, he's so good,” praising Moore’s everyday influence and the way he binds the dressing room.
