Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed he will not be returning to Sunderland this season, describing his loan as a source of pride. The player said in a post that he will not be coming back.
Sunderland did not trigger their option to buy earlier in the summer, continued talks with the RB Leipzig loanee, then signed free agent Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal. Meunier’s arrival was widely seen as ending interest in Geertruida, and the 26-year-old has now confirmed as much.
In his message he thanked supporters, team-mates and staff, said making his Premier League debut for the club was a career highlight, and wished Sunderland the very best for the future.
Geertruida made 30 appearances in all competitions last season. While he did not always start, he played a significant part in the strong finish that secured a Europa League place for next season.
He added that he enjoyed life on and off the pitch during the loan and will look back on a historic campaign with pride.
