Penders was part of the Chelsea squad at the Club World Cup, but didn’t feature in the competition as the Blues beat PSG in the final to lift the trophy.

Chelsea impressed with Mike Penders progress at Strasbourg

Chelsea reportedly believe Penders is special, and the decision was taken to send the 20-year-old on loan to Strasbourg.

Strasbourg gives Penders the perfect opportunity to get his first experience in one of Europe’s top five leagues, and play European football in the Conference League.

Penders has been in impressive form for Strasbourg.

The Belgian has made six appearances in all competitions for Strasbourg, with four of those coming in Ligue 1 and has kept three clean sheets.

Strasbourg have started the season well and sit joint top on 12 points from five games, with Penders putting in some impressive performances.

It might be very early days in his loan spell, but Mail Sport have reported Chelsea are pleased with the progress Penders is making.

The reports adds Behdad Eghbali attended Strasbourg’s recent 3-2 win over Paris FC, in which another Chelsea loanee in Kendry Paez got on the scoresheet.

Belgian youngster the answer to Chelsea goalkeeping issues?

Chelsea seem to view Penders as the long term solution to their goalkeeping issues, but when the 20-year-old will be ready is another question.

The Blues currently have Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen as their goalkeepers, neither of whom have covered themselves in glory this season.

Chelsea had the chance to sign Mike Maignan in the summer, but refused to meet AC Milan’s asking price, and it remains to be seen if they will go back in January.

If he excels this season, Chelsea could take a gamble and make him number one next season, but for a goalkeeper that young it would certainly be a risk.
