Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella has been informed that surgical intervention is the only way to treat his condition.
The midfielder wasn’t able to last 45 minutes against Sassuolo last week due to a groin problem, but Maurizio Sarri still insisted on fielding him as a starter in the Derby della Capitale against Roma. However, the outcome proved almost identical, as the player had to grit his teeth just to make it to half-time.
After the contest, Sarri revealed that Rovella has a two-millimetre-wide tendon in the groin area, which is one of the recurring symptoms of this particular syndrome.
According to Il Messaggero, the Italy international has already made several consultations, with all of them resulting in the same verdict: He must undergo surgery. Therefore, at this stage, it’s a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

It should be noted that Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni had suffered from the same issue before going under the knife on June 24. He made his return to training on July 22. But while the winger didn’t miss any competitive action as he did the surgery during the off-season, Rovella will have to undergo his at a less convenient time of the year.
While Danilo Cataldi has been Rovella’s main understudy, the latter’s absence has often been felt, as he has now established himself as the team’s ultimate lynchpin. Moreover, Sarri would be loath to lose the 23-year-old at this stage, since Matteo Guendouzi and Reda Belahyane are also out due to suspensions, while Matias Vecino and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru are also struggling with injuries.
