Arsenal drew with Chelsea and Manchester City beat Everton to go top of the table in gameweek eight of the Women’s Super League (WSL).
After a brilliant start to the season, winning six from their first six, Chelsea have fallen away slightly in recent weeks. They have drawn two of their last four league games and after City’s win, they have been replaced at the top of the table by Andree Jeglertz’s side.
Chelsea opened the scoring against the Gunners in the 1-1 draw, with Alyssa Thompson bagging in the ninth minute. The Blues were in control for much of the game, and looked on course to wrap up the win, when Alessia Russo equalised and broke Chelsea hearts in the 87th minute.
The game was also dominated by controversial decisions, the biggest being Stina Blackstenius seeing a goal disallowed for a handball, when the ball did not appear to strike her hand at all.
That game was the midday kickoff on Saturday, and Manchester City did not play till Sunday, knowing that a win would take them to the summit of the league.
But the pressure did not tell as City delivered a dominant performance to beat Everton 2-1. Vivianne Miedemaa and Bunny Shaw scored the goals.
After the game, manager Jeglertz said: “Of course [moving to the top of the league] is nice and shows we are doing at least something right. That gives you a great feeling that we are doing [well] and gives the team confidence that we’re pretty good and we can win in different ways.”
Manchester United lost 1-0 to Aston Villa, and missed the chance to truly stake their claim in the WSL title race. Three points would have taken them to 20 points and level with Chelsea, but Miriael Taylor sunk their hopes with the only goal of the game in the 35th minute.
Tottenham were blown away by the London City Lionesses, who beat Martin Ho’s side 4-2 at the Copperjax Community Stadium.
London City are now only three points behind Tottenham and are up to sixth in the table. They have proven they can compete with the best teams in the league after their impressive win this weekend and a hearty display against Chelsea last week, even though they lost 2-0.
West Ham drew 1-1 with Leicester to register their first point of the season, whilst Liverpool drew 1-1 with Brighton to also record their first point of the season.
