Manchester United were reportedly offered the chance to sign Douglas Luiz in a swap deal involving Brazilian attacker Antony.

Antony has been linked with a permanent exit from Manchester United after his successful loan spell at Real Betis, where he scored nine goals and picked up five assists. Juventus were keen on securing his signature, and they were prepared to offer the former Aston Villa star in exchange.

Directorial change scuppers move

Luiz has previously shown his ability in English football, and he was outstanding for Aston Villa. He has been labelled as a ‘world-class’ player by John McGinn in the past. The opportunity to sign him in exchange for Antony could have been ideal for the Red Devils.

However, the move has now hit a snag after the departure of Cristiano Giuntoli. The former Juventus director has left the club, and he has been replaced by Damien Comolli. According to Fabrizio Romano on GMS, the two clubs held talks regarding the potential swap deal.

Giuntoli wanted to improve Juventus’ attacking unit with the signing of Antony. He has been outstanding for Real Betis in recent months. There is no doubt that he would have been a quality acquisition for the Italian club. Leaving Manchester United permanently would have been ideal for the player as well.

As for Luiz, he has not been at his best in recent months. A return to his comfort zone could have been ideal for him. He played his best football in the Premier League with Aston Villa.

Manchester United need more defensive cover and control in the middle of the park, and the Brazilian could have been the ideal acquisition. He is at the peak of his powers, and he could have established himself as an important player for Manchester United.

It will be interesting to see if Manchester United moves on to other targets now. They need to improve their midfield, and they will look to sort out the long-term future of Antony as well.
