Even though their absolute priority is the signing of a new centre-forward, FC Barcelona remain on the lookout to strengthen the centre-back position.

For a while, Alessandro Bastoni appeared to be the preferred option, but things have cooled down on that front in recent weeks.

Instead, Manchester City defensive mainstay Josko Gvardiol has emerged as a target for the La Liga champions, with the Croatian international held in high regard within the club.

Man City expect Gvardiol to stay and renew contract

However, according to Simon Bajkowski of Manchester Evening News, Manchester City are not expecting Gvardiol to leave the club this summer.

The only way an exit could occur is if the defender asks to leave and the Premier League giants receive an ‘astronomical’ offer, which they believe is highly unlikely at this point.

In fact, as per the journalist, the Cityzens are fully confident that Gvardiol will stay at the club and sign a new contract, even though more talks and discussions with his camp might be needed.

Gvardiol’s current contract with Manchester City runs until 2028 and another renewal would pretty much put him out of reach for Barcelona, as well as Real Madrid, who have also shown an interest.

What next for Barcelona?

As far as Barcelona are concerned, signing a new centre-back is not at the top of their priority list currently.

The aim is to finalise the signing of a new striker who can replace Robert Lewandowski, with Julian Alvarez being the topmost priority.

Once that is done, Deco & co. will continue to explore the market for centre-backs, although they are currently well-stocked in the position with Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, and Gerard Martin.
