Marc Guehi made his Manchester City debut yesterday in City’s 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium. It was expected that Guehi would make an immediate impression for Pep Guardiola’s side, given his pedigree as a player after signing for City from Crystal Palace. The England international did exactly that yesterday as he put in a polished display and added exactly what City needed in the heart of their defence.
The first aspect of Marc Guehi’s game that stood out yesterday was his leadership. In his Manchester City debut, he was often seen organizing City’s defence behind the play. Guehi was Crystal Palace’s captain, so his leadership traits were well known and established. To see him step into Manchester City’s defence and take the reins in his City debut was pleasing. The England international figures to add more leadership qualities to Pep Guardiola’s side, and that is a major positive.
In possession, Guehi added composure to Manchester City’s play. With the ball, Guehi made good decisions and helped his team dominate possession against Wolves. Also, Guehi’s ability to play a quality long ball stood out. In the first half, he picked out Antoine Semenyo with a sublime long ball over the Wolves’ defence. If it wasn’t for a strong save by José Sá from Semenyo’s shot in the 8th minute, Guehi would have picked up his first City assist.
Defensively, Marc Guehi was solid, and he went about his defensive work with minimal fuss. He read the game exceptionally well and was always in the right spot to snuff out any danger that Rob Edwards’ side created. Guehi’s presence seemed to lift Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico O’Reilly, and to an extent, Matheus Nunes. Manchester City’s defence looked immediately stronger and more composed with Guehi in the team.

Speaking with mancity.com after Manchester City’s win, Marc Guehi shared that he was pleased with his City debut. He added that he can feel the willingness to win that permeates through the Manchester City squad. Speaking after his team’s win, and his debut, Marc Guehi said: “It’s good, it’s good, I don’t want to get too ahead of myself. But I’m thankful for the opportunity and thankful to be at the football club. It’s not bad, it’s good. It’s just the mentality of the team since I walked in, you can feel that intensity and that willingness to win.”
Marc Guehi put in a strong performance in his Manchester City debut yesterday. He added exactly what he was brought in for with his leadership, presence, ability in possession, and defensive prowess. Guehi has now got his City debut out of the way, and if yesterday’s performance from the England international is anything to go by, he will quickly become an important player for Pep Guardiola’s side.
