A big injury blow suffered late in the international break after John Stones returned early

Manchester City have been rocked by another big injury ahead of the return of Premier League football.

After seeing Rayan Cherki be sidelined for several weeks, City now face another injury in attack after Omar Marmoush suffered a knee ligament injury while on international duty.

The previous week, John Stones was forced to withdraw from England duty due to “minor muscle issues.”

In more positive news, the likes of Phil Foden, Savinho and Josko Gvardiol could all be back in contention, albeit missing match fitness.

Omar Marmoush

The Egyptian forward has suffered a knee ligament injury while on international duty.

Marmoush was forced off during Egypt's 0-0 draw with Burkina Faso on Tuesday, and was pictured wearing a knee brace and using crutches after the game.

The Egyptian Football Association confirmed after the game that "Marmoush has suffered a bruised knee ligament”, adding: "The player will undergo an X-ray upon his arrival to Cairo [on] Wednesday morning."

City on Wednesday ruled Marmoush out of the derby. A statement read: “Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation.”

Potential return date: Unknown

Rayan Cherki

Summer signing Rayan Cherki is already facing an extended period on the sidelines after picking up a thigh injury.

The forward scored on his Premier League debut, a 4-0 win at Wolves, but struggled against Tottenham, and has now been ruled out until late October.

Guardiola said on August 31: “He’s out for two months. Seven or eight weeks.”

That could see Cherki miss as many as 11 games, including three Champions League outings, before returning.

Phil Foden

Phil Foden has been struggling with an ankle injury during the opening weeks of the season.

A 16-minute cameo off the bench during the defeat to Tottenham has been his only exposure so far, and he subsequently missed out on the England squad.

Despite being a no-show against Brighton, it is hoped he will be back in contention after focusing on his recovery during the international break.

John Stones

The centre-back had started all three of City’s Premier League games this season, but was forced to withdraw from England duty with “minor muscle issues”.

It was a surprise given Stones had played 90 minutes for City just four days beforehand, but means the defender is a doubt for the Manchester City.

Tuchel said during the first week of the international break: “Unfortunately, John [has] just left. He came with minor muscle issues and did not progress as we thought and hoped he would.

“So, he left the camp because we will not take the risk with him.'

Abdukodir Khusanov

City’s Uzbek defender was withdrawn from the Brighton clash with a minor knock, but Pep Guardiola was quick to allay any worries that he could be set for an extended absence.

He said at full-time that the player would be fit to return immediately after the international break.

“Unfortunately he had a knock, a kick, and he had problems in muscular and that's why he could not continue,” Guardiola said. "I think Khusa is fine, he's fine."

Savinho

The Brazilian has not yet been able to feature for Manchester City this season due to injury.

Pep Guardiola said last month that Savinho would be out for “a few weeks”, and he has now returned to training with the hope of facing Manchester United this weekend.

Josko Gvardiol

The formidable Croatian defender is another who has yet to play for Manchester City this season.

A knock ruled Gvardiol out of the first three games of the season, and Croatia’s squad to face Faroe Islands and Montenegro.

However, the defender returned to training before the international break and should be in contention for the Manchester derby.

Mateo Kovacic

The Croatian had surgery on an Achilles problem ahead of the Club World Cup, and has not made a competitive appearance since.

Asked before the season for an update, Guardiola said: “We have three [defensive midfielders], I would say, with Kova injured until September or October - hopefully earlier.”
