Manchester United beat SK Brann 3-0 tonight in the Women’s Champions League, proving they belong among Europe’s elite.
After failing to qualify for the UWCL group stage two years ago, SK Brann finally achieved their goal – to play European football for the first time in history.
Marc Skinner’s side dominated the first leg in Norway but fell behind after Ingrid Stenevik’s late header gave Brann the advantage. United overturned the deficit in style thanks to a perfect hat-trick from Norwegian Elisabeth Terland.
United started fast, pressing high as Brann sat deep and struggled to play out from the back. Exploiting space on the wings, the home side struck early. Terland won the ball, fed Jayde Riviere, and then finished Riviere’s cross into the top corner. Minutes later, she doubled the lead, heading in Julia Zigiotti Olme’s corner.
The rest of the half saw United dominate possession and try to find a way through the Brann block, while the visitors held their shape and clung on.
After the break, Brann showed more intent, pushing their wide players higher, but United’s defence held firm. Eventually, Terland completed her hat-trick – left foot, header, right foot – after linking up with Melvine Malard, who drove forward before slipping Terland through to finish past Panengstuen.
The two-legged tie finished 3-1 to United, seeing them through to the UWCL. Brann will compete in the inaugural Europa Cup.
