Manchester United could appoint Gareth Southgate as their new manager if they sack Ruben Amorim.
Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been in direct contact with Southgate in recent weeks.
He was considered for the role before the Red Devils named Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s replacement in November last year. Southgate didn’t want to return to management at the time.
Amorim is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford after a disastrous start to the 2025-26 season.
United have registered just seven points from six Premier League matches this term. They were eliminated from the League Cup after losing to League Two club Grimsby Town.
The club’s hierarchy could be forced to pull the trigger if Amorim fails to win the upcoming home fixture against newly-promoted Sunderland before the international break.
Southgate is reportedly under consideration, but United supporters are unlikely to want him.
The 55-year-old failed to win any silverware during his time as England’s manager between 2016 and 2024.
He won 57 out of 91 games in charge, but the record is underwhelming, given the quality of players at his disposal.
Southgate also managed Middlesbrough between 2006 and 2009, where he lost 63 out of 151 matches.
His defensive style would not suit United and appointing him would be a big mistake.
