Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned that Manchester United could move in for Aston Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez. O’Rourke said,

“If Man United are in the market for a new goalkeeper and an experienced one, there’s not many better around than Martinez.

“Obviously, there was a lot of talk that he was going to leave Villa in the summer and United were the main club to show interest in him.

“They tried to get him on loan and that was never going to be agreed by Aston Villa. There was obviously interest for Martinez to make the move to Old Trafford as well.

“Of course the window closed with Martinez and United brought in Senne Lammens, but he’s more of a long-term goalkeeper, so if they are wanting an experienced option then obviously Martinez ticks a lot of boxes for them.

“His long-term future at Aston Villa is still up in the air considering everything that happened in the summer, and I’m sure he could be tempted to make a move.

“It would be difficult to do a deal in January, but if they’re still in need of a new goalkeeper next summer, then it may be something they look at again.”

Martinez’s Impressive Form In English Football This Season

The 33-year-old is having a decent campaign at the West Midlands club as he has put in a few impressive displays for them in the Premier League. Martinez has made five appearances for the Villans this season, conceding four goals and keeping one clean sheet in multiple competitions.

His current contract at Villa Park will run out in the summer of 2029. Thus, it won’t be easy for the Red Devils to sign him on the cheap next year.

Should Manchester United Boss Ruben Amorim Snap Martinez Up?

Martinez can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks when he is playing with confidence on the field. He is a solid handler of the ball as well and can use his quick reflexes to make some impressive saves at the back for his team.

Standing at 1.95m, the Argentine talent can use his strong frame to dominate his penalty area. However, he can sometimes be prone to making errors at the back.

We can expect Martinez to enhance the quality of Man United boss Ruben Amorim’s first XI. He has got the experience to serve as an ideal mentor to Senne Lammens at the Mancunian club.

At 33, Martinez has still got a few good years left in him to play at his best. Thus, it makes sense for the Red Devils to try and snap him up this January or at the end of this campaign.
