The Manchester United leadership have been giving more and more consideration to appointing Michael Carrick as the Red Devils permanent manager in the summer, according to the Independent journalist Miguel Delaney.
He claimed in his ‘Inside Football’ bi-weekly newsletter today that the Man United hierarchy have already been thinking about handing Carrick the job only for that shortlist to begin getting shorter following Thomas Tuchel’s decision to extend his England contract.
The German signed a new deal to stay as the Three Lions manager until 2028 despite well-connected industry figures earlier tipping him as one of the strongest candidates for the Old Trafford job.
Tuchel moving on is good news for Carrick following his impressive start to life as Man United’s interim boss.
The Red Devils have four wins and one draw in five Premier League games under their former midfielder, and the performances of many of the players have improved significantly.
Carrick is not guaranteed the job right now as Man United may still need to secure Champions League football at the end of the campaign for him to be considered.
There are still other candidates for the job despite Tuchel’s decision, but he has done his chances plenty of good and will hope the short break before the next round of games does his players a world of good.
The Red Devils are not back in action until February 23 with a trip to Merseyside to take on Everton before games against Crystal Palace and Newcastle United.
They are fourth in the table but have three teams breathing down their necks ahead of the final 12 games of the season.
Carrick will be desperate to pick up as many points as possible in those fixtures, and he needs his men to keep stepping up and giving their all every game.
