Manuel Neuer has sustained a muscle tear in his right hamstring and faces an indefinite spell out, the club said in a statement on Monday after he was injured against Mainz on Sunday.

Bayern Munich drew 2-2 with Mainz, extending their unbeaten Bundesliga run to 14 matches. The 39-year-old, a 2014 World Cup winner, started under Vincent Kompany and was hurt during the game.

Jonas Urbig, the second-choice goalkeeper, should deputise during Neuer’s absence. The 22-year-old has made four appearances this season.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern visit Heidenheim on Sunday 21 December, their final outing before a long winter break.

The Bundesliga resumes on 11 January for Kompany’s side.
