Switzerland advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 with a commanding 2–0 victory over Algeria in Vancouver, built on ruthless counter-attacking efficiency. Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute after Johan Manzambi's brilliant run down the left, before Dan Ndoye struck within a minute of the second-half restart to effectively end the contest.

Despite controlling 56 percent of possession, Algeria failed to convert early pressure into goals, with Houssem Aouar squandering a gilt-edged chance in the sixth minute that proved symbolic of their wastefulness. Switzerland's defensive discipline and clinical finishing set up a Round of 16 clash with the winner of Colombia versus Ghana. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Switzerland v Algeria.

Winners

Denis Zakaria (Switzerland)

Denis Zakaria delivered a standout performance operating at right-back, providing Switzerland with both defensive solidity and attacking threat throughout the match. His versatility proved crucial to Murat Yakin's game plan as he dominated the right flank against Algeria's attacks.

Zakaria drove forward to deliver the cross that Rafik Belghali deflected into Dan Ndoye's path for Switzerland's crucial second goal. Earlier in the second half, he produced a vital block on Riyad Mahrez's first-time shot inside the area, denying what could have been Algeria's route back into the match.

His influence on both sides of the ball helped Switzerland control proceedings despite Algeria's territorial advantage. By the time he was withdrawn in the 87th minute, the match was won and Switzerland's clean sheet was secured.

Johan Manzambi (Switzerland)

Johan Manzambi produced the moment of magic that broke the deadlock, driving forward on a rapid counter-attack before delivering a precise left-footed cutback for Breel Embolo to convert in the 10th minute. It was a goal created from nothing that shifted the complexion of the match.

The assist extended Manzambi's remarkable tournament to three goals and two assists across four World Cup matches, making him the first Swiss player to be directly involved in five goals at a single World Cup edition. His pace and direct running were a constant threat throughout his 71 minutes on the pitch.

Beyond the statistics, Manzambi's willingness to run at Algeria's defence gave Switzerland an outlet whenever they won possession. His influence drew a booking from Farès Chaïbi in the 36th minute, the Algerian fouling him in frustration as the Swiss forward caused repeated problems on the counter.

Loser

Houssem Aouar (Algeria)

Houssem Aouar squandered Algeria's best chance of the match in the sixth minute, failing to convert from close range after a cutback left him with a clear sight of goal near the penalty spot. His poorly struck right-footed effort went wide, setting the tone for a frustrating evening.

A further attempt from outside the box in the 14th minute lacked any power and was easily gathered by Gregor Kobel. Aouar's inability to make the most of his promising positions in the final third epitomized Algeria's wastefulness in front of goal throughout the tournament.

With Algeria needing their playmaker to provide a creative spark, Aouar failed to deliver when it mattered most. He was substituted at 58 minutes having made no meaningful impact, and his early miss proved all the more costly as Switzerland punished the African side on the counter-attack.
