Marcos Braz reveals the real reason for Gabigol’s Flamengo exit | OneFootball

Marcos Braz, now at Remo, has said Gabigol’s 2024 Flamengo exit followed a renewal process that was on track before false claims disrupted talks, with the club later deciding not to proceed.

"Gabriel knows the truth. The negotiation was carried out, all the procedures, and it previously went through the departments it should have at the club. It was cowardly from some scoundrels who said I had agreed a figure without authorisation and Landim did not sign. I could not defend myself because I would have to give details in some situations, so I kept quiet," he told GE.

"As time passed, it did not materialise and it ended as it did. Flamengo's football department followed all the renewal procedures it had for six years. It reached a point where they understood they should not renew, and that is what happened."

Between 2023 and 2024 the club idol was in poor form. It was the final cycle of the Landim and Braz administration, who were said to have offered a one-year extension with a 50% salary increase.

The centre-forward was said to have rejected that proposal, seeking a longer deal. After winning the 2024 Copa do Brasil with two goals, Gabriel accepted a four-year contract with Cruzeiro.

Without Gabigol, Flamengo face Fluminense on Sunday 25 at 18:00 Brasília time at the Maracanã. The Fla-Flu is the fourth round of the Carioca and will be shown live on Rede Globo free-to-air.
