Marcos Braz has discussed why Flamengo parted with Filipe Luís in March, suggesting the current hierarchy did not want to continue with a coach associated with Rodolfo Landim’s previous board.
"I think there was always a sense that, at some point, a change could happen, which is a right of the board. And I think, since there was early-season tension over the renewal, they did what they felt was necessary, they removed Filipe Luís and the staff," he said. He told Lance.
"Leonardo Jardim came in, whom I consider a good coach. I did not see a big problem, they just did not want to continue with a certain coach because there was a stamp linked to the previous board. That happens everywhere in the world, even with results and professionalism."
Filipe Luís was promoted at the end of 2024 after Tite’s dismissal. With no senior coaching experience, he was handed the chance by Braz, then the club’s football executive.
He won the Copa do Brasil in 2024 against Atlético-MG, then in 2025 lifted the Campeonato Carioca, Brasileirão, Supercopa do Brasil and the Libertadores.
His deal ran to December 2025 and, after lengthy talks led by Bap, an agreement was reached. A few months later, the club ended the relationship in March.
Flamengo moved quickly to appoint Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, formerly of Cruzeiro and unattached. With him in charge, they face Cusco of Peru on Wednesday.
