Marti Cifuentes has cooled talk of a January move for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, saying he is content with Jakub Stolarczyk and Leicester City’s keeper group.
City’s links to Patterson are longstanding, and national reports last weekend suggested they would compete to sign the 25-year-old in January, according to LeicesterMercury.co.uk. He is currently back-up after Robin Roefs’ summer arrival.
Suggestions they may seek a new number one, even on loan, appeared to bemuse Cifuentes. When asked, he replied: "I'm very happy with my three goalkeepers. Extremely happy."
Shot-stopping numbers indicate Stolarczyk has been among the Championship’s best performers this season. Yet his mistake against Ipswich denied City a first clean sheet since September, and a run of 15 games without a shutout is the second longest in the division.
At 3-0 up, Stolarczyk tried a short pass into Oliver Skipp inside his own box, it was picked off and Jens Cajuste finished to give Ipswich a lifeline.
Cifuentes said the moment was not solely on the goalkeeper, noting Skipp’s movement did not help, and he took responsibility. “Sometimes when we build an identity, the way we want to play, we have to work out if we fail, how we want to fail,” he said. He added that City’s build-up in zone one has produced far more than it has cost.
“We’ve worked during the week, we analysed some things with the players involved, and I’m sure we’re going to keep improving.”
