Roberto Martinez has saluted Bernardo Silva ‘s intelligence as Portugal prepare for the World Cup.
The head coach sees the midfielder’s reading of the game as his defining gift. Speaking to The Athletic, he hailed a player able to operate almost anywhere.
“It’s that intelligence,” Martinez said. “Bernardo is such an important player at the international level, because you can use him in different positions, he understands the moment of the game, the relationship between space and time, and he executes everything at perfection with his technical ability.”
That versatility has long made Silva a cornerstone for his country. He can drift between midfield and the flanks, link play, and track back without complaint.
The praise lands at a pivotal moment in his career. Silva will leave Manchester City when his contract expires on 30 June, ending a glittering nine-year stay.
He departs as club captain, having won six Premier League titles and the Champions League.
His next move remains open. Silva has said he will only decide after the World Cup, with agent Jorge Mendes urging patience.
Barcelona are the reported frontrunners, and he is said to favour the move enough to accept a pay cut.
He will not lack suitors. Atlético Madrid, Benfica, and clubs in Saudi Arabia and MLS have all registered interest.
Hansi Flick is believed to admire him, though a crowded Barcelona midfield may yet complicate any agreement.
