Liverpool are ready to sanction their biggest sale since Philippe Coutinho, Anfield Watch understands.
Liverpool’s biggest sale remains the €135m departure of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona. It is, in all honesty, one of the worst signings of all time from the Catalonians.
Not only did Coutinho not live up to expectations but he was also on loan at Bayern Munich as they knocked Barcelona out of the UEFA Champions League in 2020 in route to winning it. That’s underselling it, actually: he scored twice against them.
Still, from a Liverpool perspective, it’s some of the finest business they’ve ever done. Coutinho was playing sensational football at the time and his exit was a blow, but the money coming in allowed for the Reds to comfortable adapt their squad.
They’d sign some elite players and build a team that went on to win the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020. There’s no question that it was the right move to make.

Liverpool haven’t made a sale of that level since. Nothing close, in fact, and the second-biggest sale remains Luis Suárez to Barcelona in 2018 for around €80m. They’re ready to eclipse that one, however.
Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Cody Gakpo, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano. Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool aren’t keen to lose the winger but would sell for their asking price of £72m.
That’s €85m, in other words, making the potential sale the second-biggest in club history and the largest in over eight years. We wouldn’t expect Liverpool to use the incoming funds for anything like the overhaul seen in 2018 - but hopefully it’s a level (or three) above what they did with the Suárez money.
This is one to watch this week, then. The Premier League season kicks off in under three weeks now, with the window shutting at the end of the month. Teams are eager to get their key deals over the line.
That stands for both Spurs and Liverpool with this one. The pair of clubs need to know if this deal is possible before they know how to handle the rest of the window.
So let’s see what happens.
