Belief is key for Mathys Tel.

The forward lashed home his first goal of the season in our 2-1 win against Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday, with his performance and attitude drawing praise from Thomas Frank and team-mates.

Thomas pointed towards Mathys’ ‘progression’ playing in the central attacking role against West Ham, Doncaster and now Leeds, where he raced onto Mo Kudus’ pass, drove to the box and fired home - his first goal since April.

“It's about always believing in what you want to do,” he told us afterwards. “I always believe, every day. Even if I have bad moments, good moments, I always believe. Today I just took the opportunity to show what I can do and I'm very happy.”

Thomas said in interviews before kick-off that Mathys was ‘what we need’ for Leeds. “I don't know, but I always try to do my best,” responded Mathys. “I helped the team with the goal today. We won. Even if something can be better, I'm very happy about the win. We got the three points. We did it also for the fans, for the club. I think we deserved to win this game.”

It was also Mathys first visit to the always boisterous Elland Road, where Leeds had been unbeaten in league action for over a year. “Everybody said to me, when you go to Leeds, the game is going to be very difficult,” he said. “That's what I saw today. It was a tough game for us, but like I said, we showed a big mentality. We worked all together, from the first minute until the last. I'm very happy and we need to keep going.”
