Sunderland Echo reports that Sunderland are exploring a move for Roma winger Matias Soule, with Fulham also linked.

The Black Cats want their first summer signing as they prepare for a first Europa League campaign under Regis Le Bris. So far only exits have been confirmed, with Eliezer Mayenda to Rennes, Dan Neil to Rangers and Nazariy Rusyn to Karpaty Lviv.

The 23-year-old Argentine has built his senior career in Serie A with Juventus, Frosinone and Roma. He hit 11 goals and three assists on loan at Frosinone in 2023/24, then joined Roma the following summer in a reported £24m deal after interest from Newcastle United and Crystal Palace.

Soule has 12 goals and 13 assists in 81 Roma appearances across the last two seasons. He signed a five-year contract in 2024, leaving three years to run, and is represented by Martin Ariel Guastadisegno.

He is uncapped at senior level for Argentina, though he received a call-up for a qualifier against Chile in September 2024 and did not play. He was in the initial 55-man pool for this summer’s World Cup but missed the final 25.

Asked about his future on returning for pre-season, Soule indicated he was unsure whether he would remain at Roma. It has been suggested Sunderland made tentative enquiries, and that his representative has travelled to England for talks with Sunderland and Fulham, with Roma said to want around £30m.
