Matvey Safonov (26) arrived at Paris Saint-Germain with the ambition to displace Gianluigi Donnarumma (26) in the hierarchy. He failed to do that in his first season, following his move from Krasnodar. And despite the Italian’s departure, Safonov continues to find himself in a backup role.

Since Lucas Chevalier’s arrival from Lille OSC over the summer, Safonov finds himself out of the picture. The Russia international has not played a single minute of football this season, and given that Chevalier is considered the future for PSG’s goalkeeping position, his prospects of game time are heavily limited.

On Monday, Safonov did a Q&A on Instagram, during which he voiced his frustration with the role that he is currently playing for the UEFA Champions League champions. “It is really frustrating because you don’t know if you’re playing until the last minute, and you have to physically and mentally prepare for every match. But getting annoyed is the easiest thing to do in this situation. It is a lot harder to keep your motivation and strength to continue the fight,” said Safonov.

The goalkeeper was also asked what it meant to represent to PSG, to which he responded with a picture of himself sitting on the bench, without any caption. It is not a situation that is likely to change any time soon.
