Manchester United captain Maya Le Tissier says her team are ready to play with intensity as they look to progress into the group stages of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
They play PSV on Wednesday, 27th August, and hope to do better than their previous performance in the tournament, when they lost on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain in the second qualifying round.
“It’s going to be exciting,” she told the club’s television channel. “I’ve had a little bit of experience, playing the qualifying games two years ago. Hopefully it’s a better outcome this time. I’m really looking forward to it.
“The way that we did it last season [to qualify for the Champions League] was great and it was really hard fought, and we’ll make sure we carry that spirit into the games to come.
“No matter how you have to get into the Champions League, it’s such a massive tournament, it’s so big, and everyone wants to play in the Champions League, and that’s what everyone dreams of playing in, so I think everyone will be ready to go come the game against PSV.”
The 23-year-old also gave some hints as to the style of play that onlookers can expect from Marc Skinner’s side this season, saying: “We want to play with intensity, we want to defend, we want to run forward, we really want to work hard for each other.”
Le Tissier joined up with United’s squad in their warm-weather training camp in Marbella, having gone on holiday herself following the conclusion of the 2025 Women’s Euros. She had been part of Sarina Wiegman’s England squad that successfully defended their title, beating Spain on penalties in the final.
“It was really cool,” she said. “It was great to be a part of the team, and I learnt a lot when I was away. I came away with the gold medal, which was really good.”
And although she got only a short off-season this year because of her international commitments, it’s a trade-off she is happy to make.
“I’m very lucky to be part of the Euros squad and would never not want to be a part of that, so I’m ready for the new season now,” she said.
Le Tissier signed for United from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2022. She was named United captain after the departure of Katie Zelem to Angel City in summer 2024.
