Kylian Mbappé led Real Madrid yet issued a stark post-match verdict after a bruising night in Lisbon, where his two goals and Thibaut Courtois’ saves merely softened a heavy defeat to Benfica. He later called the final concession a disgrace for the team.

According to Superdeporte, speaking in the mixed zone at da Luz, Mbappé criticised Madrid’s lack of continuity, saying the display was unlike Villarreal and that both their current standing and Benfica’s win were deserved.

He reflected on the goals conceded, highlighting the final act when the Ukrainian goalkeeper Trubin scored, and said it still shamed them even with Madrid down to nine men. Mbappé maintained it was not simply an attitude issue, arguing that every detail counts in the Champions League and that Benfica punished any failure to meet the occasion.

Arbeloa was similarly self-critical, accepting full responsibility, echoing sentiments he had voiced in Albacete. He stressed Madrid are not out of the Champions League, with two matches remaining to reach the last 16, and said he stood by his messages while rejecting the notion that the front two failing to run cost them.

Jude Bellingham said the defeat felt awful and unexpected, and that the team must review it. He admitted intensity was lacking, that Benfica won most 50-50s, and even the basics eluded Madrid. He added they could not turn it around on the night and must keep improving.
