Memphis hits Dutch headlines after Copa win, criticises Corinthians board

The statements made by Memphis Depay after winning the Copa do Brasil crossed Brazil’s borders and gained traction in the European media. The protagonist of the final by scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 victory over Vasco da Gama last Sunday at Maracanã, the Corinthians striker became a topic in the Dutch press not only for his decisive performance on the field, but also for his public criticism directed at the club’s board and revelations about the club’s internal environment.

Outlets such as NOS, AD, Nieuws, and De Telegraaf highlighted Corinthians’ number 10, emphasizing the contrast between his decisive performance in the final and the harsh tone he adopted in interviews after the final whistle. For Dutch newspapers, Depay’s firm stance when addressing administrative issues drew as much attention as the goal that secured Timão’s fourth national title.

AD described Memphis as a key figure in the victory, highlighting the goal that clinched the title. The publication, however, noted that the celebration was accompanied by direct demands to the club’s management, with the striker calling for structural changes and greater professionalism in football operations, even amid the trophy celebrations.

De Telegraaf, meanwhile, was more incisive in its analysis of the player’s remarks. The newspaper described Depay as “irritated” after the match and pointed out that, despite this being his first title with Corinthians, the Dutchman made it clear he expects a deep overhaul, arguing that the club should consistently compete in continental tournaments again.

Nieuws, in turn, contextualized the statements within the delicate financial situation Corinthians is experiencing. The report recalled the club’s high level of debt and noted that Depay views the situation with concern. Even so, the outlet emphasized that the striker is not considering leaving Timão, reinforcing his connection with the Corinthians fanbase.

On the field, Memphis finishes the season as the team’s second top scorer, with 12 goals and ten assists, totaling 22 direct goal contributions. The player’s contract with Corinthians runs until June 2026.

After winning the Copa do Brasil, Timão will only play again in 2026. The debut for the next season is scheduled for January 11 at 4 p.m., against Ponte Preta, at the Neo Química Arena, for the first round of the Campeonato Paulista.
